Purpose
Approach
Quantitative and qualitative
Research questions
The research will examine the range of formal teaching qualifications available for initial VET teachers being delivered across Australia, their key elements/attributes and the trends in their enrolment numbers and completion rates. It will also document the characteristics of learners accessing these courses, and – in particular – what study those entering these programs have undertaken prior to entry.
The project will also involve examining what differences, if any, there are in the initial teacher training requirements provider types and jurisdictions.
Methodology
This report is based on a review of relevant literature, consultations with key providers and interest groups as well as analysis of available data and program documentation. In particular it will involve interrogating relevant higher education and VET data bases to determine uptake of these various qualifications, learner characteristics, trends in participation and completion as well as evidence of prior study – particularly in relation to other teaching qualifications already held; using course documentation and discussions with key program staff to identify and document key attributes of these various programs and finally accessing relevant policy and other documents and identifying any qualifications requirements related to teaching in relevant industrial awards and agreements across public and private providers.
This research forms part of a more comprehensive program. Other work includes the review of the Training and Assessment Training Package (TAA04) and work to understand how well the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment adds value to practitioners’ skills in training and assessment. This project is part of NCVER’s national managed research program. In addition the Australian College of Educators is co-ordinating projects to investigate factors that affect the quality of VET teaching and the quality of the resulting VET experience in the view of employers and graduates.
Organisations
This project has been funded under the NCVER Core-funded program.
