Adult Learning Australia Inc (ALA)

Adult Learning Australia promotes and fosters the value of learning. It has a very varied membership, reflecting the extraordinary diversity of adult learning, which includes adult educators in universities, TAFEs, and community education providers; as well as community health and environment workers, librarians, individual tutors and trainers, volunteers and students. The association is a national body with members in all states and territories and a national office based in Canberra. It is funded by a grant from the Australian National Training Authority, membership dues, subscriptions and project revenue. AEShareNET

AEShareNet has been established to enable the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector to 'discover' resources, take out a copyright licence online and connect to the owner to arrange purchase. The site provides a series of standard copyright licence templates that can be completed online, giving instant approval for use of the product. The underlying principle is to encourage training organisations to re-use and re-purpose materials and save on development costs.

AUSTAFE Inc

AUSTAFE is a constituted national association of TAFE managers whose executive consists of representatives from each of the State or Territory Chapters. Each of the Chapters has its own executive and undertakes activities autonomously. It had its origins in 1980 as the Australian Association of TAFE Principals and as a professional association it has a commitment to promoting excellence in vocational education and training. AUSTAFE offers professional support, but not industrial advocacy for its members. Key goals of the organisation include: advance the professional status of AUSTAFE; provide forums for the interchange of members' views; and increase and broaden the membership base whilst promoting professional development opportunities for members. Australasian Corrections Education Association Inc. (ACEA)  

The Australasian Corrections Education Association was incorporated as an association on 17 September 2004. ACEA provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and values pertaining to education and training programs provided in correctional settings and to people on corrections orders in the general community. ACEA also seeks to influence policy makers and other interested parties in developing effective education programs for people in correctional settings. Australian Clearinghouse for Youth Studies

The Australian Clearinghouse for Youth Studies (ACYS) provides information products and services for those working in the youth field and for anyone with an interest in youth. This includes practitioners in areas such as health and education, researchers, policy-makers, youth workers and youth service providers, as well as students and parents. The Australian Clearinghouse for Youth Studies is a non-profit project, funded partly by the Australian Government through grants from the Department of Family and Community Services, and partly through ACYS publishing activities

Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER)

ACER's mission is to create and disseminate knowledge and tools that can be used to improve learning. Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET)

Established in 1992 and with over 400 member organisations, ACPET is now the largest body representing the private education and training sector in Australia. It was established because it was believed that the private sector needed a strong national body to represent the interest of members in discussions with State and Federal Governments and other agencies. The web site is predominantly set up for members of the Council but it does provide limited information for non-members to access such as information about ACPET, details of their national conference, contact details and a weekly E-Tech Newsletter (in PDF).

Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET)

ADCET is a web based information source that provides up to date, accurate and comprehensive information about inclusive teaching, learning and assessment strategies, accommodations and support services for people with disabilities in post secondary education and training. ADCET services primarily target teachers, disability practitioners, learning support staff, researchers and policy makers. It also holds information and resources that may be useful for students. Access to all information within the website is currently free but there are plans to charge a subscription fee from June 2004 to enable the Clearinghouse to become self-funding. ADCET is hosted by the University of Tasmania, and is a Department of Education Science and Training (DEST) funded development of the National Clearinghouse on Education and Training for students with disabilities (NCET).

Australian National Training Authority

As of 1 July 2005, the responsibilities and functions of ANTA have been transferred to the Australian Government's Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). To ensure information previously managed by ANTA remains accessible, DEST provides a link to this information via its own website. Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)

This web site is produced by the Australian Qualifications Framework Advisory Board as a means of providing access to information about the AQF, a unified system of thirteen national qualifications in schools, vocational education and training and the higher education sector. It has a link to the 3rd edition on-line version of the AQF Implementation Handbook; Learning pathways; AQF and schools; AQF and employment and others.

This association was set up in 1998. Australia's only national, independent association of researchers in vocational education and training, it brings together researchers from the TAFE, university, industry and government sectors. Owned by all Ministers of Education and Training in Australia, the company undertakes, on behalf of the Australian education and training community, tasks that arise from this brief. As well as managing visible products of the collaboration, like EdNA Online, education.au works for standards and agreements that enable online collaboration in education, such as the EdNA metadata standard. Learning Communities Catalyst

The Learning Communities Catalyst website was launched on 1 September 2003. It is a collaboration between Adult Learning Australia, the Australian Learning Communities Network, the Australian Local Government Association and EdNA Online. Funding of the website is through a research grant from ANTA. The website has been established to serve as a repository of information, research, case studies and practical tools to assist communities, councils, government, businesses, policy-makers and other stakeholders researching, advocating for and developing learning communities. The site provides the technology to facilitate collaboration, debate and information exchange for those involved in learning communities, and allows those communities without the resources or expertise to create their own website a simple way to establish an online presence.

National Industry Skills Council (NISC)

The National Industry Skills Committee was established in March 2006 and will provide the Australian Vocational and Technical Education Ministerial Council with high-level, evidence-based advice on workforce planning, future training priorities and other critical issues facing the training sector. National Industry Skills Initiative  

Late in 1999, the Australian Commonwealth Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, in conjunction with leading Industry and Business organisations, instituted an industry led process designed to establish the steps that industry, government, and the partnership of both could take to redress industry skill shortages. This web site provides an overview of the Skills Initiative, contains links to specific industry skill shortage reports, speeches, media releases, cross industry issues and contacts.

National Quality Council (NQC)

The NQC was established in December 2005 and as a Committee of the Australian Ministerial Council for Vocational and Technical Education, oversees quality assurance and ensures national consistency in the application of the Australian Quality Training Framework standards for the audit and registration of training providers. This website is still being developed and currently provides information and links to the Committee's role and terms of reference, the Council members and to its latest news.

National Training Information Service

The National Training Information Service has been developed by ANTA to provide access to current and emerging training market information and products in vocational education and training. Reframing the Future

Reframing the Future is a new major initiative of the Australian National Training Authority and aims to develop VET staff capability in implementing core components of the National Training Framework (NTF) such as Training Packages, assessment, competency based training and the Australian Recognition Framework; assist VET organisations to develop industry-driven, demand-driven and outcomes-focused cultures supportive of the NTF; establish innovative and effective links between different VET stakeholder groups to support the achievement of the NTF; and to provide VET organisations with linkages to research findings and best practice models. Skills Australia

As part of the Australian Government's Skilling Australia for the Future policy, a new independent statutory body entitled Skills Australia has been established to provide advice on current and future demand for skills and investment of public funds in training. A key priority for the body will be to signal to government, and industry, important changes of direction required in VET services and the labour market generally to maintain workforce participation and to grow productivity. Skills Australia is comprised of seven experts drawn from a range of backgrounds with expertise in economics, industry, academia and education. This website has been established by the Australian Government to provide skills-related information and links for industries and regions, skills issues and education and training in Australia. The information is based around five themes: Education and training, Industries, Regions, Skills Issues and Skills links. The website includes Industry Employment Profiles that present, in graphical form, a comprehensive suite of data on employment characteristics, trends and prospects for all industries. Information is also provided on skills shortages, skills in demand, workforce ageing, occupation information, employability skills and ICT skills.

TAFE Directors Australia

TAFE Directors Australia is an association of Directors (Presidents) of Institutes of Technology and Technical and Further Education. The association was incorporated in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in October 1998 and is an independent, non-profit organisation. Membership is open to Chief Executive Officers of TAFE Institutes - and TAFE components of multilevel universities, for as long as they hold office. Technical and Vocational Education and Training  (TVET) Australia Ltd.

This new Australian Ministerial company (September 2006), jointly owned by the Australian, state and territory governments has been established through a merger of Australian Training Products and AEShareNet. TVET will continue to publish and distribute high quality, useable and cost effective national competency standards, Training Packages and competency based curriculum and related materials. AEShareNet is a collaborative system to streamline the licensing of intellectual property so that Australian learning materials are developed, shared and adapted efficiently. VETNETwork

VETNETwork is the Vocational Education and Training Network, an Australian network of teachers, trainers, program co-ordinators, administrative and support personnel committed to vocational education and training in schools. It is a membership-based organisation, and draws its members from all States and from Government, Independent and Catholic School sectors. It has approximately 1000 members nationally, 70% of whom come from schools, and 30% from a diverse range of individuals and organisations with a common interest in vocational education in schools. Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (UK)

The DIUS, established in June 2007, brings together functions from the former Department of Trade and Industry, including responsibilities for science and innovation, with further and higher education and skills, previously part of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). Electronic Training Village - vocational training in Europe

The ETV, established in 1998, is an interactive platform; a meeting point for policy-makers, social-partners, practitioners, researchers and all those with an interest in vocational education and training. The site is divided into four main areas, 'ETV News', 'Exchange of views', 'Projects and Networks', and 'Information Resources'. Users can access, the ETV newsletter, a bulletin board, online surveys and survey reports, information on VET networks, an electronic library with over 27,000 references, a bookshop with downloadable publications and a number of databases. ERIC - Educational Resources Information Center

The core function of ERIC is to provide a centralised bibliographic database of journal articles and other published and unpublished education materials, including vocational education and training information. The database is enhanced by the availability of free full text and electronic links to commercial sources and ease of use and up-to-dateness. European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP)

Established in 1976, CEDEFOP is the European agency that assists policy-makers and practitioners of the European Commission, the Member States and social partner organisations across Europe make informed choices about vocational training policy. European Forum of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (EFVET)

EFVET is a unique European-wide professional association which has been created by and for providers of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in all European countries. Its mission is to champion and enrich technical and vocational education and training through transnational co-operation by building a pan-European network of institutions and practitioners which will: promote quality and innovation in Technical and Vocational Education and Training throughout Europe develop collaboration, mutual co-operation and sharing of good practice; and give colleges a platform of influence in European TVET policy. Developed with the support of the European Commission and the European Institute of Education and Social Policy, EFVET is the only transnational organisation of this type for TVET. Its policy is determined by its member colleges and schools. It collaborates with, but is independent of all government and funding bodies. Its income is derived from membership subscription, grants and sponsorship.

FAS - Training and Employment Authority

FAS - Training and Employment Authority, was established in January 1988, under the Labour Services Act 1987 to provide a wide range of services to the labour market in Ireland. Its mission is to increase the employability, skills and mobility of job seekers and employees to meet labour market needs, thereby promoting competitiveness and social inclusion. FçS provides a range of training and employment programmes, aimed at employers, employees and unemployed people. International Labour Organization (ILO)

The International Labour Organization is the UN specialized agency which seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally recognized human and labour rights. It formulates international labour standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations setting minimum standards of basic labour rights: freedom of association, the right to organize, collective bargaining, abolition of forced labour, equality of opportunity and treatment, and other standards regulating conditions across the entire spectrum of work related issues. It provides technical assistance primarily in the fields of: vocational training and vocational rehabilitation; employment policy; labour administration; labour law and industrial relations; working conditions; management development; cooperatives; social security; labour statistics and occupational safety and health. International Training Centre of the ILO - Turin

Established in 1964 by the ILO and the Italian Government, the non-profit body, International Training Centre (ITC) in Turin, Italy, is the training arm of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Originally conceived as a technical and vocational training institution, it has matured into an institute for post graduate and high-level in-service training. Today, its alumni network of over 80,000 men and women is present in 172 countries. The Centre supports the achievement of ILO's prime purpose - the promotion of decent work for women and men. Learning and Skills Council

Established in April 2001the Learning and Skills Council is responsible for all post-16 education and training other than in universities. The Council has brought together the skills of the Training and Enterprise Councils and the Further Education Funding Council to work with partners, employers, learning providers, community groups and individuals to develop and implement strategies that meet the Government's aims set out in the 'Learning to Succeed' White Paper. It works alongside the Employment Service, the Small Business Service, Connexions, the National Training Organisations, further education and sixth form colleges, and representatives of community groups, to understand, define and then meet training and education needs. The Learning and Skills Council's national office is in Coventry, with 47 local Learning and Skills Councils across England. National Business Institute - South Africa  

The National Business Initiative (NBI) is a visible expression of the private sector's contribution to social development in South Africa. The NBI is a vehicle for business to act collectively in partnership with the South African government to build a stable democracy in which a market economy functions to the benefit of all citizens. The NBI's core focus is on the contribution of the business community to skills and enterprise development in South Africa. The NBI presently has four programmes aimed at addressing the challenges of skills and enterprise development in the country.

  • The Business Trust Management Unit manages the R1billion Business Trust, focusing on tourism and schooling.

National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE)

NIACE, a non-governmental organisation for adult learning, is an England and Wales body (within Wales a specialist committee, NIACE Cymru, oversees the organisation's work). While we have members in other parts of the UK, our work does not focus on Scotland or Northern Ireland where there are distinctive education systems and structures for adult learning. A unique feature of NIACE is that its work crosses the sectoral boundaries of post-school education and training. Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)

QCA is the guardian of standards in education and training in England. It works with others to maintain and develop the school curriculum and associated assessments, and to accredit and monitor qualifications in schools, colleges and at work. The QCA provides advice to the Secretary of State about the school curriculum, about ways pupils and students are assessed and about qualifications in both general education and training. They also:

Quality Improvement Agency for Lifelong Learning (QIA)

Formed after the closure of the Learning and Skills Development Agency (LSDA) in April 2006, the QIA has been set up by the government to speed up quality improvement, increase participation and raise standards and achievement in the learning and skills sector. QIA's role is to create a strong strategic focus on improving quality in further education and training. It will lead development of a quality improvement strategy for the sector and will also help education and training organisations to respond to the government's strategic priorities. Its key role will be to commission a range of services which will be provided by other organisations. Scottish Funding Council  

The Scottish Funding Council (SFC), established in 1999, distributes more than £400 million of public money each year to 46 of Scotland's further education colleges. The main functions of the Council are: funding for colleges to secure adequate and efficient provision of further education; monitoring the financial health of the sector; promoting continuous quality improvement and innovation in learning and teaching; offering guidance to colleges; and advising Scottish Ministers of funding matters.
