The Adult Literacy and Numeracy Australian Research Consortium represents a national collaboration between five university-based research centres, based on a collaborative research management model designed to respond to state-based needs. The Consortium was initially funded for the period 1999-2001/2 under Adult Literacy National Project funds provided by the Australian National Training Authority and managed by the Department of Education Science and Training. In the latter part of 2002 the Consortium has moved to a self-funded model of research support operating through five of the original six university centres. The Centre for Post-compulsory Education and Lifelong Learning was established in 1998 (as the Educational Outcomes Research Unit). It was created to undertake research into unequal patterns of student achievement and the process underlying these patterns. Since the late-1990s, the unit has extended its work to include vocational education and training, both school-based and in the tertiary sector and adult education, particularly in the community sector. In both these settings, the research emphasis has remained on researching benefits, explaining differences in the share of these, and seeking to influence both the quality and the distribution of benefits. Since 2003, the work of the Centre has been further extended to include econometrical modelling of relationships between student outcomes and resources, school and family characteristics and location and size of schools, and evaluation of equity and access funded programs. The Centre for research on education, training and employment (CŽreq) was set up in 1971. Its studies and statistical surveys on the training-employment relationship are intended to assist the public authorities (notably at the national and regional levels), the occupational branches and the social partners in developing and implementing their policies on vocational and educational training and human resources management. Historical background - In November 2000 the Further Education Development Agency (FEDA) became the LSDA. Up till April 2006, the LSDA was a strategic national resource for the development of policy and practice in post-16 education and training. It also worked closely with the FE sector and other key education and training organisations. From 1992 to 1999, UNEVOC was UNESCO's International Project on Technical and Vocational Education. During 2000-01 the UNESCO International Programme on Technical and Vocational Education Training was implemented.
