A trade leads to a job and better pay

NCVER’s recent Apprentice and Trainee Destination Survey reveals that those who complete an apprenticeship or traineeship are well rewarded.

Dr Tom Karmel, Managing Director of NCVER said not only were trade apprentices who finished their training finding work, but they were making more money as well.

“92.9% of trade apprentices who completed their training found work, compared with 76.0% of those who did not complete their training,” Dr Karmel said.

“Trade apprentices and trainees who finish their training earn $49 100 per year on average, while those who do not earn $38 100. Non-trade apprentices and trainees who complete their training also do quite well, earning on average $44 900,” he says.

The survey also found that there were a myriad of reasons why apprentices and trainees do not complete their training, from realising they don't like the work to not getting on with the boss or fellow workers.

The Apprentice and Trainee Destination Survey tracks apprentices and trainees nine months after leaving their training. This is the first time the survey has been undertaken.
