William (Bill) Hall: 1938 - 2009

We are sad to announce that Dr William (Bill) Cecil Hall, former Managing Director of NCVER, passed away on the 9th May 2009, aged 70.

Bill headed NCVER between 1984 and 1996 during its formative years, and was a great force in raising both the profile and the achievements of the organisation. It was Bill’s idea to establish the NCVER magazine, Australian Training Review, which is the predecessor of Insight.

During his time as Managing Director, NCVER took on responsibility for collecting the annual TAFE statistical data collection from the Department of Employment, Education and Training and, a few years later, the collection of apprentice and traineeship data. This heralded a significant shift in NCVER’s responsibilities and a new direction for the company.

On the research side, Bill introduced a range of new publications, including the very popular Getting to grips with... series and authored several himself. He was also instrumental in establishing NCVER as a leading provider of consultancy services to the VET sector.

Bill was active in the development of many of the international relationships the Centre currently enjoys, including with the International Labour Office, the Overseas Vocational Training Association of Japan, and SEAMEO Voctech.

After retiring from NCVER, Bill became highly knowledgeable about Australian pottery and, with his wife Dorothy, wrote many books on pottery and antiques and collectables. They edited the Collectables Trader magazine, contributed regular columns to SALife and Australian Home Beautiful and wrote articles for magazines such as Antiques and Art in Australia. He and Dorothy were featured on the ABC Collectors program, talking about their interest in Australian collectables and their writing partnership.

Bill is survived by Dorothy, his children Ruth and Judith, and his grandchildren.
