New 'wiki' sums up adult literacy and numeracy

27 January 2009

Generating and sharing ideas within the adult language, literacy and numeracy community is the aim of a new wiki developed by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).

www.adultliteracyresource.edu.au brings together key messages from the Adult Literacy Research Program (ALRP), a comprehensive body of research that explores a wide range of literacy and numeracy topics.

Tom Karmel, Managing Director, NCVER said the wiki was developed to help literacy practitioners apply the key messages from across the research program in their work and to encourage the sharing of information.

"It provides easy access to the breadth of this body of work and supports the development of ideas and discussion through participants' contributions," Dr Karmel said.

"To do so, we have drawn out the key messages from each of the projects and pulled them together under a number of different themes."

"As well as providing a summary of the research findings, the wiki also provides links to related reports available from NCVER's VOCED database and other practical webbased resources."

Research topics undertaken as part of the program ranged from adult literacy teaching and learning approaches and outcomes to professional development needs of literacy practitioners.

A number of projects also covered various literacy practices and delivery approaches across Indigenous and ethnic communities, industry, volunteer and community settings.

NCVER managed ALRP on behalf of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
