New partnerships to strengthen tertiary education research

20 December 2010

Policy-makers and practitioners alike are set to benefit from research to be undertaken by five new partnerships between leading Australian universities and the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).

NCVER Managing Director, Dr Tom Karmel, announced today that NCVER has awarded three-year research grants to the following institutions for their research programs:

  • LH Martin Institute – Vocations: the link between post-compulsory education and the labour market
  • Centre for the Economics of Education and Training – Geographical aspects of the role of training in improving social inclusion
  • Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research – Promoting social inclusion for disadvantaged groups through education and training
  • Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute – Social and economic outcomes for apprentices and trainees with a disability
  • Griffith University - Meeting Australian workers’ needs for continuing education and training.

NCVER received an unprecedented 41 proposals in response to its first call for research against the new national research priorities for tertiary education and training.

“The research that the five centres will be conducting will cover significant issues facing Australia’s tertiary education sector”, said Dr Karmel.

NCVER has opted for working with research centres following a review that showed this approach offered ‘more bang for the research buck’.

“This approach helps to attract high calibre researchers, build a significant body of knowledge and promote a partnership between researchers, policy-makers and practitioners.

“I congratulate all the researchers who’ve won a contract. We look forward to working with them over the course of the next three years”, said Dr Karmel.

NCVER will call for tenders for its open funding category in early 2011.
