The National Centre for Vocational Education Research has released the June 2006 quarter apprentice and trainee statistics for the Australian vocational education and training system.
For the year ending 30 June 2006, the number of people commencing an apprenticeship or traineeship increased by 3% to 267 200, compared with the previous year.
The number of apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 June 2006 remained steady, down 0.2% to 400 200 from the end of June 2005.
Statistics comparing apprentice and trainee activity for the year ending 30 June 2006 with the previous year show:
the number of people completing an apprenticeship or traineeship rose by 5% to 142 400
the number of people cancelling or withdrawing from an apprenticeship or traineeship increased by 4% to 131 300.
The number of people undertaking a 'traditional apprenticeship' has grown to 157 700, up 9% from the year ending 30 June 2005.
