Take-up of apprenticeships continues to grow: Latest national statistics

The number of people starting an apprenticeship or traineeship continues to grow, according to the latest statistics released by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the number of people commencing an apprenticeship or traineeship has grown for six successive quarters. In the 12 months to 30 September 2005, the number of commencements increased 5% over the previous year to 267 600.
There was considerable growth (up 13%) in commencements for older people (aged 45 years and over), and in 'traditional apprenticeships', which recorded an increase of 14% over the previous year.
The trend of increased commencements in apprenticeships and traineeships in higher-level qualifications continued in the year to 30 September 2005. More people commenced training contracts at the Australian Qualifications Framework qualification level three or higher (up 8%).
Nationally over the 12 months to 30 September 2005, newly commencing apprentices and trainees were predominantly young (aged 19 years and under) and male.
Overall, the number of apprentices and trainees in-training remains stable at 397 800, unchanged from the previous quarter and down 1% from a level of 400 900 one year ago.
The number of people completing an apprenticeship or traineeship over the 12 months to 30 September 2005 reached 139 600, representing a 5% increase over the previous year.
