Training in an ageing society: International experts meeting
4 October 2006
International experts will meet in Adelaide to discuss and gain a better understanding of the factors that impact on older people who undertake training for employment reasons.
The meeting, organised by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) in association with organisations from Germany, Korea and the Philippines*, will be held at the Sebel Playford Hotel, on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 October.
'Many countries around the world are rethinking the way they provide training because of their ageing societies and the impact of this demographic shift on their labour markets,' said Dr Tom Karmel, Managing Director, NCVER.
'In particular, older people are being encouraged to stay in the workforce longer and to upskill or, in some cases, re-learn an entirely new set of skills. This has resulted in a transformation of the student base for training providers and a change in the nature of training itself.'
The visiting international experts over the two days of the meeting will discuss the challenges countries, including Australia, face and examine the barriers and enablers to training older people.
Chosen discussants will draw out key implications for policy and practice.
The culmination of the meeting will be a consolidated volume of papers jointly published by NCVER and UNESCO.
