NCVER conducts and manages research into Australia's vocational education and training (VET) sector. The aim of the research is to inform VET policy or practices. Some research is undertaken by NCVER on a commercial basis.
NCVER, on behalf of the Australian Government and state and territory governments, co-ordinates and manages the National Vocational Education and Training Research and Evaluation (NVETRE) program.
The NVETRE program provides funding annually for VET research and commissions research based upon the research priorities agreed to by the Ministerial Council for Vocational and Technical Education.
NCVER manages the program according to a set of principles to ensure that it is relevant to VET policy or practice. In 2007, NCVER commissioned the services of research centres to provide a three year program of research aligned with the national research priorities.
In addition, over the period 2007-2009, funding rounds will be available for:
single project grants against the specified research priorities, and
open category grants
NCVER is not eligible for competitive research funds under the NVETRE program.
The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) is a research program that tracks young people as they move from school to post-school destinations. It is managed and funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
On 1 July 2007, NCVER was awarded the contract to provide analytical and reporting services for LSAY to 2010.
Through its consultancy arm, NCVER provides professional research, development and implementation services to Australian and international clients. NCVER has completed over 400 external projects in areas ranging from the training needs of diverse groups, analysis of industry skill requirements, program evaluations and research into a range of national training policy and practice issues.
