Australian Vocational Education & Training

An overview

Developing advanced and high level skills training

One of the characteristic features of the Australian vocational education and training system is its diverse and comprehensive coverage, from short programmes to intensive advanced programmes, across a wide range of skill areas. The range and diversity of Australia’s vocational education and training system is clearly reflected in the statistics on participation and participation patterns previously discussed.

Over one-third of the total hours of training delivery each year are in advanced level courses (that is, AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Certificate IV programmes). Also, a majority of apprentices and trainees undertake a programme at AQF level III or higher. Advanced and high-level skills training is particularly important for high-technology industries.
