At 31 December 2002:
- An estimated 373 200 persons were undertaking an apprenticeship
or traineeship, an increase of 14.8% from 31 December 2001.
- Three-quarters of apprentices and trainees in-training were undertaking
AQF level III programs.
- The two largest occupation groups were the trades and related workers,
and intermediate clerical, sales and service workers occupations,
having 35.4% and 27.5% of the total number in training respectively.
From 1996 to 2002:
- Participation rates in apprenticeships and traineeships for Australias
employed workforce (15 to 64 years) increased from 1.9% to over 3.9%.
- Participation rates for young people (15 to 24 years) increased from
8.5% to 11.6%.
- Participation rates for young females (15 to 24 years) more than doubled,
from 3.4% to 7.6%.
