This publication provides a summary of activity undertaken by
apprentices and trainees in 2003. An apprentice or a trainee is
an employee undertaking vocational training through a contracted
training arrangement. The figures in this publication are estimates
and subject to revision.
- 279 900 people commenced an apprenticeship or traineeship in
2003, up 5% from 2002.
- Numbers of apprentices and trainees grew strongly in 2003 for
Indigenous Australians (up 27% from 2002) but fell for people
with a disability (down 5% from 2002).
- At the end of 2003, there were 397 100 apprentices and trainees
intraining (up 8% from 2002), which was faster than the growth
in overall employment (up 2% from 2002).
- Apprenticeships and traineeships are no longer the domain of
young people; almost half are aged 25 years or more.
- Around three in ten people commencing an apprenticeship or
traineeship in 2003 were already working for their employer, mostly
in business services, transport and distribution, and retail.
- Apprenticeships and traineeships remain an important pathway
for young people when making the transition from school to work:
- Around one in five teenage males, and one in ten teenage
females, in employment in 2003 were an apprentice or trainee.
- Over 12 000 secondary school students commenced a school-based
apprenticeship in 2003, mostly in retail and hospitality.
