This report provides statistical information on apprentices and trainees (ie persons who undertook vocational training through contract of training arrangements) for the March quarter 2002 (1 January to 31 March 2002).


Highlights for March quarter 2002

  • There were an estimated 334 370 apprentices and trainees in-training, an increase of 29 630 from March 2001.

  • The number of apprentices and trainess in-training in the Trades and related workers occupational group (128 490) was 2.5% lower than the number reported at March 2001.

  • Part-time apprentices and trainees accounted for 23% of the total in-training, up from 18% at 31 March 2001.

  • School-based apprentices and trainees accounted for 2% of the total in-training.

  • There were 114 490 female apprentices and trainees in-training, accounting for 34% of all apprentices and trainees, an increase from the 33% reported in March 2001.

  • There were an estimated 227 860 commencements in the 12 months ending March 2002, up 7% from the previous 12 months.

  • There were an estimated 104 530 completions in the 12 months ending March 2002, up 23% from the previous 12 month period.
