Australian vocational education and training statistics: Apprentices and trainees, September quarter 2007 - Summary

Technical and explanatory notes

Data sources

The information provided is derived from the national apprentice and trainee collection which is compiled under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS).

These tables contain figures on apprentice and trainee activity based on the date of effect rather than the date of processing. Due to lags in processing, recent activity levels are estimated. The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers based on average reporting lags. Unless shown in bold the figures used in this publication are estimated. Standard errors and confidence intervals for the estimates are provided in Table 18 of the 'Australian vocational education and training statistics: Apprentices and trainees - September quarter 2007, Summary. All figures are subject to revision, and may differ from those published in earlier or in subsequent reports. Further details on the methodology can be found at:
http://www.ncver.edu.au/publications/1543.html.

Data notes

Existing Worker

Newly commencing workers are those who are not existing workers. An existing worker is defined as a person who has been employed by the employer, who is party to the training contract, continuously for more than three months full-time or twelve months casual or part-time or a combination of both, immediately prior to commencement of the training contract.

Traditional apprenticeships

The number for "traditional apprenticeships" is approximated by trades contracts at AQF III qualification or above with more than two years expected duration for full-time contracts and more than eight years expected duration for part-time or school-based contracts. This definition may not be consistent with legal definitions of apprentices that apply in some jurisdictions.

School-based

School-based apprenticeship and traineeship data for cancellations/withdrawals and for historical commencements are not reported in this publication due to data quality issues.

Apprenticeship or traineeship training undertaken by a student will be a School-based Apprenticeship or traineeship when all of the following apply:

  • The student is enrolled a senior secondary certificate under the relevant Education ACT
  • The school or education provider at which the student is enrolled acknowledges and endorses the Training Plan/outline required by the Apprenticeship/Traineeship Training Contract
  • The school-based Apprenticeship or traineeship is recognised on the senior secondary certificate.

Expected duration of training

Expected duration are derived using the anticipated completion date of a contract.

Australian Capital Territory

The ACT has identified errors in the extraction process for producing the number of commencements of training contracts resulting in a reduction in 2007. The extraction process has since been rectified and updated data will appear in the next quarterly release. Cancellations/withdrawals and completions data are not affected.

Privacy and confidentiality

The privacy and confidentiality guidelines associated with AVETMISS include the requirement that individuals and individual providers are not identifiable in any data reported from the national database. The data collection will not generally contain information about identifiable groups with fewer than nine persons.
