Australian vocational education and training statistics: Apprentices and trainees, September quarter 2007 - Summary

Highlights

This publication provides estimates of apprentice and trainee activity for the quarter ending 30 September 2007.

An apprentice or trainee is a person undertaking vocational training through a contracted training arrangement.

As at 30 September 2007:

  • the number in-training was 418 800, an increase of 2% from one year earlier
  • there were 170 300 ‘traditional apprentices’ in-training, up 9% from one year earlier.

In the year ending 30 September 2007, compared with the year ending 30 September 2006:

  • commencements increased by 5% to 277 100
  • completions increased by 4% to 144 200
  • cancellations and withdrawals increased by 6% to 133 800.

This publication contains figures on apprentice and trainee activity based on the date of effect rather than the date of processing. Due to lags in processing, recent activity levels are estimated. The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers based on average reporting lags. Unless shown in bold, the figures used in this publication are estimated. Standard errors and confidence intervals for the estimates are provided in table 18. All figures are subject to revision, and may differ from those published in earlier or in subsequent reports.

Further details on the estimation methodology can be found at http://www.ncver.edu.au/publications/1543.html.
