Employers' use and views of the VET system: Summary 2005

Highlights

This publication provides information on employers’ use and views of the vocational education and training (VET) system.The findings presented relate to the various ways in which Australian employers use the VET system to meet their skill needs, including:

  • hiring staff with vocational qualifications as a requirement of their job
  • employing staff undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship
  • providing staff with other nationally recognised training other than as part of an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Information is also presented on employers’ use of unaccredited training to meet their skill needs.

Overall, 57% of all employers had some form of engagement with the VET system in the past 12 months.

  • 35% of all employers have jobs requiring vocational qualifications
  • 28% of all employers have at least one apprentice or trainee
  • 24% of all employers have staff undertaking other nationally recognised training (not as part of an apprenticeship or traineeship).

Employers are generally satisfied with the way the VET system helps them to meet their skill needs.

  • 77% of employers with jobs requiring vocational qualifications are satisfied
  • 79% of employers with apprentices and trainees are satisfied
  • 80% of employers using other nationally recognised training (not as part of an apprenticeship or traineeship) are satisfied.

53% of employers provide other formal (unaccredited) training that is not part of the VET system.
