Purpose
This study will examine the role of traineeships in the transition from school to work. Specifically it will examine:
* The factors that influence school leavers decisions in whether or not to participate in a traineeship (this will include intentions as well as participation)
* The benefits that accrue to the person who completes the traineeship compared with those who leave school with no further education or who do a short course
Approach
Literature review and data analysis
Research questions
1. At a descriptive level, what are the characteristics of those school leavers who chose to participate in traineeships?
2. What are the important factors determining whether or not a school leaver participates in a traineeship?
3. What is the impact of completing a traineeships on latter labour market outcomes?
4. Do the benefits gained from completing a traineeship increase, persist or dissipate over time?
Methodology
This study will involve:
Literature review
Analysis of LSAY data from 1995-2001 (descriptive analysis and multi-variate analysis)

THE INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH INTO INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS (IRIC)
IRIC is the research institute of the Curtin Business School. It is one of four designated Research Institutes of the Curtin University of Technology. The Institute undertakes applied academic economic and business research and consulting services for organisations in government and the private sector within Australia and overseas. Its operations include research and development, publication, consulting, corporate services and post-graduate education. Much of its research is published in peer-reviewed academic journals and books.
