Purpose

The project is interested in the extent to which undertaking a VET course increases the chances of obtaining employment for people who have formerly been on welfare.

Approach

Data analysis.

Research questions

1. How effective is training for groups covered by 'welfare to work' initiatives in improving the prospects of employment?

2. Are some courses more effective than others in this regard?

Methodology

The project exploits data from the student outcome survey. First, we construct groups with demographic characteristics that are similar to three of the designated welfare groups: parents of children aged between 6 and 15 years; people with disabilities; and mature people. we choose those people who were not in work at the time of their training and whose reason for studying is employment related. we then fit simple models with the dependent variable being whether the person is in employment or not after training.

Organisations

This project has been funded under the NCVER statistical research program.
