Purpose

To meet labour market needs there is increased interest in retaining older workers in employment for longer. Enhancing the job opportunities and skills and competencies of older workers will increase their employment rate but other factors are also important. These include labour market conditions, public policy, cultural changes, increased life expectancy and more flexible work arrangements.

This 'At a Glance' publication gives an overview of recent research exploring factors related to increasing the workforce participation rate of older Australians.

Approach

Qualitative

Research questions

The impact of an ageing population on labour market and Australian economy, and in particular, the importance of older workers, labour supply and increased productivity will be explored in this project.

The link between health and well-being and participation in workforce will also be investigated.

Methodology

This study will firstly look at the demographics around ageing in Australia (including labour force participation).

Factors influencing older workers to remain in employment (such as labour market conditions, public policy and cultural changes, increased life expectancy and more flexible work arrangements) will all be considered.

Finally, attitudes of both employers and employees as well as public policy, and the extent to which these are barriers/enablers for training of older workers, will be considered.

Organisations

This project has been funded under the NCVER NVETRE dissemination program.
