Any failure to attain basic literacy and numeracy skills is a major educational and social issue. This study looks at the relationships between school achievement at 14 years of age, social background and labour market outcomes at 19 years. Using longitudinal data from the Australian Youth Survey, this report examines patterns of employment, income and post-secondary education and training. The study found a strong relationship between the level of reading and numeracy skills at age 14 with the likelihood of completing school and entering university and employment status at age 19. It was found to also affect the type of work and amount of pay. Research report no. 4 This report, published by the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER), is part of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) research program.
