This brief focuses on the differences in the numbers of young males and females on a range of educational and labour market outcomes. The results suggest that although there is a small but statistically significant difference between the average levels of reading comprehension of male and female students, this difference may not extend beyond school, with males on average continuing to progress through the education system and/or into the labour market to better-paid occupations than their female counterparts. Briefing paper no.8 This report, published by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is part of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) research program.
