Purpose

The aim of this research is to identify the factors, strategies and experiences that have assisted those with literacy difficulties to be successful in the work environment, despite their limitation. Positive approaches to literacy will be encouraged as well as broadening the literacy debate to acknowledge the roles that those with limited literacy take on.

Approach

Case studies of individuals

Research questions

1. How have successful people with limited literacy achieved and sustained employability?

2. How have such people developed resilience in the face of significant set backs?

3. Are these factors/strategies transferable to the contemporary work environment?

4. Has literacy teaching been of assistance?

5. What formal and informal teaching approaches, interventions and resources have assisted in achieving sustainable employability?

Methodology

Ten individuals with literacy levels at NRS level 3 and below who have been 'successful' within the workforce will be interviewed combining four tools:

* language and literacy assessment (the National Reporting System and the Certificate of General Education for Adults)

* arts based educational research tools (using images as the stimulus)

* a narrative framework

* informal interviews and observations within the community of support

The analysis will be conducted as a set of case studies. In addition, A CD-ROM using extracts from voices of the participants with a narrator unifying themes and exploring the findings will be developed.
