Purpose

This project explores the concept of 'fully on-the-job' training through the eyes of Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and trainees involved in the process. Interviews with RTO staff pointed to the need for a balanced approach to training, with RTO mentors ensuring that trainees received a sufficiently broad and flexible learning experience. Strengths and weaknesses of the approach are explored. However, regular contact and a good relationship between the employer and the RTO, and between the RTO and the trainee, were identified by both RTOs and the 860 trainees surveyed as essential components of effective fully on-the-job training.
