Purpose
To better understand the factors that are impacting on older members of society as they up-skill, retrain or pursue other interests. In many OECD nations in particular, an ageing society has required a rethink in the way technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is being delivered. In particular, the demands for older people to stay in the workforce longer and to up-skill or in some cases, re-learn an entire new set of skills, has seen firstly a transformation in the client base for TVET institutions and secondly, a change in the nature of training itself.
Approach
Meeting, paper proceedings
Research questions
The experts meeting will explore the following issues: 'Older' workers - adults - students - learners, mature aged, skilling, re-skilling and re-training, lifelong learning, labour market and other outcomes, attachment to labour market, productivity enhancement, facilitators and barriers to training, benefits of training, nature and extent of skills development, policy interventions and incentives.
Methodology
The project involves organising an Experts Meeting (in Australia) jointly between the NCVER, the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (Korea), UNEVOC (Germany) and the Colombo Plan Staff College for Technician Education (Philippines)
The event will be broken up into 2 full days of discussion and roundtable on various topics related to the theme of ageing. A discussant (not from the presenter's own research centre) would lead discussions on each paper. The ultimate outcome will be a jointly publish volume of the papers and discussant's comments with a summary overview chapter.
Organisations
This project has been funded under the NCVER Core-funded program.
