Purpose

The study will:

* determine the variety of current and future PD needs of three sectors of the LLN workforce: specialist providers of accredited LLN tuition; vocational trainers who are incorporating LLN into their delivery of Training Packages; volunteer workers in community settings

* explore various methods for meeting the current and future needs of the three sectors

Approach

Adult Literacy Research Project

Research questions

1. What skills and knowledge do LLN workers require to best meet the needs of their current and future learners?

2. Do LLN workers in different contexts require the same skills and knowledge as each other?

3. What are the options for bridging any skills and knowledge gaps for all LLN workers?

4. Is there any existing PD practice that can serve as a model for similar organisations?

Methodology

Data in this study will be gathered from the following four Australian states: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Data will be gathered using (a) electronic surveys, which can be completed and returned by e-mail, to obtain a large sample of quantitative data - 300 such surveys will be sent out with an anticipated return of 100-150 surveys; (b) 36 targeted telephone interviews, to obtain qualitative data; (c) three cross-state focus group teleconferences (eight participants at each), to obtain more detailed information from each of the three sectors of the LLN workforce under consideration; (d) one face-to-face cross-state and cross-sectoral focus group (12 participants plus research team).
