Apprentice and trainee completion rates steady

Media release

The proportion of apprentices and trainees completing their training remains steady, with 58.3% of apprentices and trainees completing their training, according to the latest data released by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).

Data in Completion and attrition rates for apprentices and trainees 2015 are calculated by tracking the outcomes of apprentices and trainees who started their training in 2011, recognising the time it takes to complete an apprenticeship/traineeship.

Individual completion rates, which take account of apprentices and trainees moving between employers while undertaking their training, have remained largely steady at 56.3% for trade occupations (down from 56.8% for those starting in 2010) and 58.3% for non-trade occupations (up from 57.7%).

Across occupations, individual completion rates range from 69.0% for hospitality, retail and service managers to 40.6% for food trades workers.

“We know that about a third of all apprentices and trainees leave within the first year of starting their apprenticeship and traineeship, with the most commonly cited reason for not completing being employment-related, such as not liking the work”, said Dr Mette Creaser, National Manager, Statistics and Analytics.

Included in the publication are the latest and projected contract completion and attrition rates, which suggest trades and non-trades completion and attrition rates will fluctuate in coming years.

NCVER has also released Apprentices and trainees 2015: Annual, a yearly summary of apprenticeship and traineeship activity. It shows that 2.3% of Australian workers were employed as an apprentice or trainee as at December 2015, compared with 2.7% in 2014.
