Interview with Lorraine Dearden about widening participation in Higher Education in the United Kingdom

By Lorraine Dearden Multimedia 27 September 2012

Description

Lorraine Dearden talks in this podcast about work she has co-authored on widening participation in higher education in the United Kingdom (UK). This work shows that students from lower socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds are much less likely to participate in higher education than their peers from higher SES backgrounds. The authors find that the impact of socio economic differences begins relatively early affecting the opportunities available to young people when they leave school. Copies of the paper Widening participation in higher education: analysis using linked administrative data are available from the Institute of Fiscal Studies (UK) http://www.ifs.org.uk/publications/4951.

Lorraine Dearden is Professor of Economics at the Institute for Fiscal Studies and Institute of Education, University of London. She is also a Director of the new Economic and Social Research Centre (ESRC) funded centre ADMIN (Administrative Data: Methods Inference and Networks) and a member of NCVER's Editorial Board.
