Building a clearer picture of apprentice completion rates

About 55% of all apprentices and trainees are likely to finish their training, according to new data released by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).

Published for the first time in one report, NCVER has released completion and attrition rates for apprentices and trainees based on contracts, individuals and projected outcomes.

Dr Tom Karmel, Managing Director, NCVER said that the comprehensive data set includes completion rates that factor in recommencements.

“We know that numbers of people change employers through their apprenticeships or traineeships and we needed a method that factored this movement in”, said Dr Karmel.

Based on this method, the data show that individual completion rates for trade apprentices are 57.4% who started training in 2005 and 56.4% for those who started in 2006. For trainees who started training in 2005 and 2006, the individual completion rate was 54.1% and 54.3% respectively.

Looking at contract completion rates, we estimate that trainee completion rates will steadily climb, from 51.8% for trainees who started training in 2004 to 59.6% for those who started in the December 2010 quarter. For trade apprentices, the trend indicates that the contract completion rates will hover around 46%.

“It’s worth noting though that completion rates do vary by industry. New research indicates that the relationship between apprentice or trainee and their employer is key to increasing completion rates”, said Dr Karmel.

NCVER has also published today the Apprentices and trainees 2010: annual.
