Completion rates are increasing for trainees but not for trade apprentices, according to data released today by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), Completion and attrition rates for apprentices and trainees 2012.

Individual completion rates increased from 55.4% for trainees who started in 2007 to 57.1% for those who started in 2008. By contrast, individual completion rates for trade apprentices have decreased slightly from 56.3% for 2007 commencements to 55.8% for those who started in 2008.

“Completion of an apprenticeship or traineeship is not only influenced by the employer’s economic circumstances but also by the individual’s personal circumstances and their choices during training,” said Ms Sandra Pattison, General Manager, Statistics, NCVER.

Also released today by NCVER is the yearly summary of training activity, Apprentices and trainees 2012: annual, which shows that 77.1% of 15-19 year-old male trade workers are employed as a trade apprentice, while for their female counterparts the training rate is 53.3%.

“This equates to 72.8% of teenagers working in trade occupations were employed as an apprentice,” said Ms Pattison.

As at 31 December 2012 there were 454 700 apprentices and trainees in training up 1.6% from one year earlier.
