Michelle Circelli, a Senior Research Officer with the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) in Adelaide, has been selected as the Fulbright Professional Scholar in Vocational Education and Training, and will undertake three months of research into measuring the success of adult literacy and numeracy programs in the US.

Ms Circelli will conduct her research with the Californian Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and the Office of Vocational and Adult Education in Washington DC.

“International research demonstrates that higher adult literacy and numeracy skills have positive economic and social outcomes.

“However, unlike the US, little is known in Australia about the returns to adult literacy and numeracy programs,” said Ms Circelli.

In congratulating Ms Circelli, NCVER Managing Director Tom Karmel, said her research will shed light on how literacy and numeracy programs can be evaluated.

Ms Circelli is a member of reference groups for the Australian Industry Group ‘Building Employer Commitment to Workplace Literacy’ and the Australian Bureau of Statistics Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies.

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 as an initiative of US Senator J William Fulbright, who believed that cultural and educational exchange could play an important role in building a lasting world peace.
