Is a university degree grossly overrated? - Adelaide set for fiery debate

The stage is set for fiery night at the Adelaide Town Hall tomorrow (Wednesday 11 July), when experts and the public debate the pros and cons of having a university degree.

Adelaide’s first ever Intelligence Squared Australia (IQ 2) Live Debate will see Annabel Crabb, Lynn Arnold and Peter Shergold go head to head with Amanda Vanstone, David Finegold and Stephen Johnston on the proposition: Having a university degree is grossly overrated.

The popular IQ 2 debates are one of Australia’s leading forums for discussion on matters of public concern.

The speakers have nine minutes each to persuade the audience in what is set to be a lively and contentious interchange.

The audience will also get the chance to participate by throwing questions directly to the speakers after the main debate.

This first IQ 2 Adelaide debate is presented by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) in partnership with the St James Ethics Centre.

“As a leading national provider of high-quality, independent information on tertiary education and training, NCVER is very proud to provide a national stage to debate what is one of today’s big questions,” NCVER Managing Director, Dr Tom Karmel said.

“While the topic is about the value of a degree, the debate is really about the breadth and depth of Australia’s education and training system.

“Education and training is a topic that resonates with everyone, from prospective students, parents and employers to those working in the sector or creating policy.

“Most importantly the debate provides an excellent opportunity for the public to have their say and challenge the opinions of each of the speakers.”

Audience members will be polled on their opinion before and after the debate to establish the dominant view on the topic and any swing of opinion either way.

Tickets are on sale via BASS or 131246 – $25/$20 concession.
