The latest data show trade apprentice and trainee commencements increased by 9.2% to 19 200 as at 30 June 2015 when compared with the same quarter last year. The biggest growth was seen with those aged 25 years and older, up by 14.8%.
Published by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), Apprentices and trainees 2015 – June quarter shows when comparing the June quarter 2015 with the June quarter 2014:
- Non-trade commencements decreased by 16.6% to 22 100. Of this those aged:
- 24 years and younger decreased by 12.3%
- 25 years and older decreased by 21.9%
- Overall commencements decreased by 6.3% to 41 300
“In spite of an overall decrease in commencements we have seen commencements in the trades grow in comparison to last June. This is mainly due to increases in construction trade workers, in particular plumbers, carpenters and joiners” said Dr Mette Creaser, National Manager, Statistics and Analytics.
“Over the same period we have seen non-trade commencements continue to fall, with the main contributor community and personal service workers such as carers and aides”.
