Numbers of commencing apprentices stabilise

The number of commencing trade and non-trade apprentices rose slightly in the June quarter 2013 to 58 700, up from 57 100 in the March quarter.

Released by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), Apprentices and trainees 2013—early trend estimates, June quarter, provides seasonally adjusted and smoothed data at the national level for trade and non-trade apprentice commencements.

Estimates show that the June quarter trade apprenticeship intake rose to 22 500, up 1200 from the March quarter. Quarterly commencements in trade apprenticeships have fluctuated for the last three years between 21 300 and 25 100.

Similarly, non-trade apprenticeship commencements increased to 36 400 in the June quarter, up from 35 000 in the March quarter. This slight increase follows substantial growth up to the June quarter last year, followed by a sharp decline in the September quarter, due largely to changes to incentive payments for existing workers.

NCVER will release detailed apprenticeship and traineeship information next month, with the release of the March 2013 quarterly data. This information will include national and state/territory level in-training, completion, and cancellation and withdrawal data.
