Globally recognised artist and arts advocate, Robyn Archer AO considers crunch points in arts education in Australia’s education system tomorrow at the 21st National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference in Adelaide.

“There is an increasing gap between hands-on learning in the arts and higher education’s lust for pure research,” says Ms Archer.

Speaking at the conference which is co-hosted by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and TAFE SA, Robyn Archer, Creative Director, Centenary of Canberra (2013), Chair of the TAFE SA Adelaide College of the Arts Advisory Board and recently appointed Deputy Chair of the Australia Council, will also reflect on her own personal path to success while discussing current changes to Australia’s tertiary sector.

The conference brings together researchers, trainers and policy-makers with the aim of strengthening evidence-based research.

Ms Archer, in her keynote address Hands-on and hands-up: the place of arts training in higher education, points out that the training system, with its emphasis on more contact hours and the master/ apprentice model, is possibly a better approach to learning and gaining tertiary qualifications for those in the arts.

“Who better to discuss how best to nurture skills in the creative arts than Robyn Archer”, said Dr Tom Karmel, Managing Director, NCVER.

Ms Archer will deliver her keynote address tomorrow at 9am, at the TAFE SA Adelaide College of the Arts.

The 21st National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference, runs from 11-13 July 2012, at the TAFE SA Adelaide College of the Arts and TAFE SA Adelaide Campus. For further information and to download a program, please visit www.nofrills.ncver.edu.au.
