Facilitating learning through effective teaching: At a glance

By Damian Blake, Peter J Smith

Teaching and learning styles in the vocational education and training (VET) sector have changed substantially over the last decade in response to changed national and international conditions. This 'at a glance' describes these changes, which can basically be summarised as a shift from traditional teaching in classrooms to facilitating learning, and involving a substantial reliance on the workplace in the learning process. Making this shift can be a challenge for some VET teachers and this publication offers useful strategies and models for dealing with the changes.

Getting to grips with learning styles

By Jennifer Dalton, Peter J Smith

This booklet gives teachers and trainers in vocational education and training some easily digestible information about learning styles. It provides practical tips on how to identify students' learning styles, and how to respond to individuals and groups based on their preferred methods of learning. There is not a 'best' theory about learning styles; however, understanding learning styles theories helps teachers to observe their students more systematically and be more methodical in experimenting with alternative teaching approaches.

Accommodating learning styles: Relevance and good practice in vocational education and training

By Jennifer Dalton, Peter J Smith

This research was designed to identify how vocational education and training practitioners viewed learning style differences between students and how they took account of those differences in designing and delivering teaching. It involved surveys, focus groups and case studies in five TAFE institutes and one professional network of public and private trainers. The research found that teachers have developed a range of personal methods of identifying individual and group learning styles and a range of techniques to respond to them.
