New data released today reveals 85.3% of international students who graduated from an onshore Australian vocational education and training (VET) program in 2016 were satisfied with the overall quality of their training.
The report International onshore VET graduate outcomes 2017, compiled for the first time by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), provides the results of a recent trial to expand the scope of the annual National Student Outcomes Survey to include data on the training outcomes and satisfaction levels of international onshore VET graduates.
The results show that 82.0% of international onshore VET graduates were employed or in further study after training, with 88.8% of graduates saying they would recommend their training and 84.8% their training provider.
Around 38 000 international onshore VET graduates were invited to take part in the trial. In addition to the standard data collected by the survey, these graduates were also asked about the location of any further study, barriers to employment, current country of residence and the type of visa they held.
International onshore VET graduate outcomes 2017 is now available from www.ncver.edu.au/publications.
The release of this new data also marks the start of the collection period for the 2018 National Student Outcomes Survey. Already Australia’s largest survey of VET students, the survey is set to expand yet again this year and over 800 000 people who completed training in 2017 will be contacted, including international onshore VET graduates.
With information collected on employment outcomes, training satisfaction, and the benefits and relevance of training, the results of this survey help students make informed decisions about their training via the MySkills website, and help governments and training providers to plan, administer and monitor the VET system.
The expanded survey will include more people from private training providers, and give more registered training providers information on their students’ satisfaction and post-training outcomes.
VET graduates and subject completers are urged to spare 10 minutes to complete the survey if they are contacted. Results from this year’s survey will be available at www.ncver.edu.au in late 2018.
For more information about the survey visit https://www.ncver.edu.au/data/collection/student-outcomes.
The National Student Outcomes Survey is conducted on behalf of the Australian, state and territory governments, with funding provided through the Australian Government Department of Education and Training. The survey includes students who completed a qualification or subject with a VET provider in 2017.
