About the research
This research examines the evolving role of VET teachers and the supports needed to strengthen teaching practice and learner outcomes. Emerging from the VET Workforce Blueprint, the project provides insights into the increasingly complex environment in which VET teachers work and identifies opportunities to better support teachers and learners across the sector.
Key findings
- The VET teaching role is becoming more complex, requiring teachers to balance teaching, compliance and administrative responsibilities while responding to diverse learner needs. As these demands evolve, the broader system must provide the support, resources and conditions needed to enable effective teaching and positive learner outcomes.
- Teachers are increasingly supporting learners whose barriers to success extend beyond course content, including mental health, behavioural and wellbeing challenges. Consequently, responding to psychosocial challenges has become an important component of effective teaching practice.
- Although these challenges are often encountered in the classroom, teachers' capacity to respond effectively is influenced by system-level factors such as manageable workloads, supportive leadership, adequate resources and clear organisational processes. It also depends on having the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise learner needs, respond appropriately and adapt teaching practice where required.
- Teachers highlighted a need for practical guidance and resources to support both teaching and learner wellbeing. In response, the project developed a suite of resources designed to strengthen teachers' capability to support learner participation and success while maintaining a focus on effective teaching and learning.
