During the last decade undergraduate university enrolments have grown considerably. To explore whether young people who would have previously chosen an apprenticeship have instead entered university, this analysis uses data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Youth (LSAY) to compare the characteristics of apprenticeship-bound with university-bound young people and to look at if they have changed over time.
This report explores occupations that can be entered into via either a vocational education and training (VET) pathway or a higher education pathway. It examines whether these individuals do the same job tasks and roles, if there are differences in how well the qualifications prepare them for the role and whether they have the same occupation and employment outcomes, such as salary and career pathways.
This research analysed the learning journeys and training and employment outcomes of students who undertake nationally recognised foundation skills programs.
This report examines the factors that influence early school leavers to re-engage with education, particularly through VET.
This research examines the merits of VET for secondary school students (VfSSS) in preparing students for work or further training from the perspectives of students, parents, industry, and employers.
This project explores if the international definitions of IVET and CVET are also suitable for the Australian VET system, including reviews of international literature and consultation with Australian VET experts.
This report uses an integrated dataset to investigate the post-school employment and training destinations of secondary school students who undertook VET for secondary school students (VET in schools) programs in 2011.
This report uses 10 years of LSAY data to reveal five main pathways taken by young people as they transition from school to work. It also identifies factors that influence pathway choice, offering potential policy cues.
This report explores whether VET undertaken by secondary students equips them with the technical and non-technical skills required to successfully participate in an ever-changing world of work.
This report examines key factors in the resourcing and efficacy of training for South Australian Country Fire Service volunteers. Volunteers use skills gained through formal and informal vocational education in the public safety sector in other parts of their working life and greater recognition of this process is warranted.
The nature of apprenticeships is changing. Uptake of recognition of prior learning and the impacts of the earlier completion confirms there is considerable demand for alternative pathways into a trade.
An overview of young people using LSAY data and research is presented in this first edition of the LSAY annual report.
What can be done to strengthen the outcomes of VET in Schools for students?
Most disadvantaged learners enrol in lower-level VET qualifications as a starting point to re-engaging in education, which makes the transition to university less likely.
Differences persist between genders in the uptake of physical and life science careers.
Effective pathways from vocational education and training (VET) to higher education help to alleviate skill shortages as well as increase access to higher qualifications and lifetime earnings for people holding VET awards.
This report uses Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) data to look at the impact of schools on a student’s tertiary entrance rank (TER) and the probability of them going to university (controlling for TER).
This report looks at the pathways Indigenous students in the Northern Territory take between VET and higher education.
This report explores the relationship between vocational education and training in (VET) in Schools and the labour market.
This report looks at the impact working while studying has on students' intentions to go to university and their actual enrolment in university.
